Dinmukhamed Kanatuly Kudaibergen commonly known as Dimash Kudaibergen is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist of Kazakhstan descent. The fame and success achieved by Kudaibergen are largely attributed to his wide vocal range that encompasses 6 octaves and 5 semitones. Dimash is a tenor alto who can reach the bottom notes of the baritone register and sing through the soprano notes and hit the notes on the whistle register. His lowest ever recorded note is A1, and his highest is the D8.

The Early Childhood of Dimash Kudaibergen
Dimash Kudaibergen was born on 24th May 1994 in the western Kazakhstan town of Aktobe to two celebrated and renowned Kazakhstan artists, Kanat Kudaibergenuly Aitbayev and Svetlana Aitbayeva. On his birth, he was named Dinmukhamed, which means son of the prophet, Kanatuly which means with wings, and Kudaibergen which means gift from God. His name is a depiction of the religious and cultural family he was born to. Kudaibergen is the eldest of his siblings – sister Raushan and brother Abilmansur.
In line with the Kazakh culture, Kudaibergen as the firstborn son was raised by his grandparents. His grandmother was among the first people around Dimash to note his love for music. She tells of how her grandson's favorite toys were audio cassettes that accompanied him everywhere he went, even in bed and in school. And thanks to this knowledge, the grandparents took the first step in nurturing Kudaibergen’s passion for music by enrolling him in the local Akhmet Zhubanov Music College to learn how to play the piano and how to sing at the children's studio.
The 5-year-old Dimash Kudaibergen easily took up the learning of notes wowing his teachers with his perfect pitch. And at the end of the same year, Kudaibergen took to stage for the first time in his life to showcase his amazing vocals. This performance marked the first of the many that he would do as a child. Dimash Kudaibergen's childhood was dominated by performing and hosting various local events, writing
poetry, arranging music, vocal studio lessons, taekwondo, and swimming training sessions.
As a child, Dimash Kudaibergen participated in numerous singing and music-related contests. In 2000, at the age of six, Dimash experienced his first win in a competition topping the Aynalayin National Pain Contest. He went on to feature in various musical contests and even joined a choir that performed in many artistic events. At the age of 12, when asked in an interview what his biggest dream was, Dimash Kudaibergen replied, “My dreams have no limits. I wish to get to the heart of the nation and be well educated. And when I grow up, I want my country to be proud of my contribution.”
Dimash Kudaibergen’s Musical Education
From the children's studio at the local music college, Dimash Kudaibergen progressed to the Gymnasium No 32 School in Aktobe where he completed a master class in Broadway Musical in 2009. Next, Dimash enrolled in the K. Zhubanov University of Aktobe to study Classical musical and graduated in 2014. After this, Dimash Kudaibergen joined the National University of Astana for contemporary music studies.
Kudaibergen’s decision to take up contemporary music in his study came as a surprise to most of his mentors and former coaches. They believed that with a tremendous vocal range such as his, his most successful career path would be in operatic singing. To persuade him further, Dimash Kudaibergen was offered a place working with the Astana Opera Theatre to give him a glimpse of what a future as an opera singer would entail for him.
He, however, declined the offer explaining that his choice to venture in contemporary music was deliberate, and he hoped it would expose his vocal range to greater challenges by experimenting with new genres. Dimash majored in Vocal while at the University and graduated in 2018. He also chose to pursue his Masters in Composing at the same university.
As a young student, Dimash Kudaibergen picked up the skills of playing different instruments. He learned to play the piano, keyboard, bass guitar, drums, bayan, cello, and marimba all before joining the K. Zhubanov University. However, his fondest memory and best experience in learning to play an instrument are when he learned to play the dombra, a long-necked traditional Kazakh lute, from his grandfather.
The Beginning Of Dimash Kudaibergen’s Musical Career
The year 2010 marked the humble beginning of Dimash Kudaibergen’s musical career when he won his first major singing competition – the Sonorous Voices of Baikonur. Two years later, he topped the Zhas Kanat singing competition in Kazakhstan and the Oriental Bazaar of Ukraine. In 2013, he bagged the top spot at the Makin Asia competition in Kyrgyzstan. It is this winning streak that earned him an invitation to perform as a guest singer in Denizli, Turkey for the Turkcevizyon gala-night.
Finally, in 2015, the stars fully aligned for Dimash Kudaibergen as he got to represent Kazakhstan in the Slavianski Bazaar Arts Festival in Vitebsk, Belarus. Midway through the 3-day competition, Dimash fell ill, and it was feared that he would not be able to make it to the finals of the contest. He, however, was determined to fulfill his childhood dream and pushed through the contest.
His determination not only saw him perform perfectly, scoring 175 out of 180 but also emerged as the Grand Prix Winner. It was at this stage that Dimash Kudaibergen created for himself a name beyond his own country as the competition was broadcasted across all CIS (Commonwealth of Independent State – Former Soviet Republics) nations.
After the Grand Prix win, Dimash Kudaibergen’s star rose higher. The year 2015 marked some of his greatest performances alongside renowned musical artists across Asia. Kudaibergen was also privileged to perform before the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, during his state visit to Kazakhstan. To crown it all, Dimash released his first song, "Unforgettable day" on August 2015 and was voted “Singer of the year” at the People of the Year awards ceremony in December.
Dimash Kudaibergen began the year 2016 by dropping his self-titled debut EP; he followed up this release with his first headlined tour in April 2016. Dimash Kudaibergen's named the tour "unforgettable day" following his first song. In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan independence, the tour ran until December 2016, made stops in 25 regions of Kazakhstan where the concerts sold out entirely and made 2 other stops, Ufa and Kazan in Russia.
Dimash Kudaibergen Rises To Fame In China
In 2017, singer Dimash Kudaibergen's fame reached China. This was thanks to his participation in Chinese Hunan Television’s “I am a singer” singing competition. The six-round competition show saw Kudaibergen compete against top-selling Asian singers.
He made history in the singing competition by being the youngest participant at 22 to ever compete in the show. He also set the record on the show for performing the most number of songs in different languages. Dimash Kudaibergen sang in a total of 6 languages; Kazakh, Russian, English, French, Italian, and Mandarin yet he is only fluent in speaking Kazakh and Russian. Kudaibergen made it to the final round of the competition where he was voted the 1st runner’s up.
Dimash Kudaibergen further solidified his name across the Asian continent by winning the “Most Popular Asian Singer” award in the ERC Chinese top ten wards in 2017. Following his growing popularity, Kudaibergen was invited to perform in numerous public events, TV shows and before dignitaries in China, Kazakhstan, and France. His highlight performances of the year 2017 include his first solo large scale concert in Bastau, Astana where he sang for nearly two and half hours to a crowd of around 30,000 people and the inauguration of the Kazakhstan pavilion at the Cannes film Festival.
The year 2018 saw Dimash Kudaibergen perform across the biggest festivals in Russia and China, bag more awards than he had ever before, and release his first English single title “Screaming” in May of the same year. This little-known artist from Kazakhstan had conquered Russia and China with his talented voice, and now his eyes were set on the United States.
Dimash Kudaibergen Debut in The United States Of America
Dimash Kudaibergen was introduced to the American audience by CBS’ “The World’s Best” talent competition show. He made it through the audition round and succeeded in the battle round.
It is however in the championship round of the competition that Kudaibergen stole the hearts of many viewers. Dimash Kudaibergen voluntarily opted out of the competition to allow his other two competitors to
proceed to the next round.
He cited that his other two competitors, aged 13 and 12, were more deserving of the opportunity and believed it was his responsibility to show support to the younger performers. This move by Kudaibergen impressed his fan and saw him win the audience vote for best performance of the rench song “SOS d’un terrien en détresse” even though he was no longer in the competition.
At 25 years of age, Dimash Kudaibergen has made history in Kazakhstan because of the level of success he has achieved. He has an impressive list of awards as well as national and international commendations. His contribution to his people and the country of Kazakhstan is immense. And just like he promised, he is representing his little-known country to the world through his musical prowess.
Throughout his journey, his family has been his greatest supporters. And his grandparents have been his pillars of strength. Mainly, this maestro traces his success back to his grandmother, who took him to his first piano and vocal lessons as a child. Unfortunately, she suffered from chronic leg pain when they moved to Astana to take care of him and his concert preparations while he attended the National University of Astana.
